Many people have likely seen an article by the above title that was written about President Obama’s meeting with Pope Benedict XVI. The article mentions several times that the pope and the Catholic Church are against abortion and stem cell research.
I hope, I really do hope, that this is just ignorance on the part of the reporter. I try not to be a conspiracy theorist, but is the Catholic position so hard to understand, or are we cryptic in our teachings? The Catholic Church is not against stem cell research; we are all for it!
IF it’s done without the destruction of human life!
The Catholic Church, and all people who believe life begins at conception, believe that embryonic stem cell research is immoral and, frankly, ineffective. Stem cells from adults are showing amazing promise to fight cancer, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, and more. Stem cells taken by artificially creating human life and then destroying it haven’t shown nearly as much potential.
Is that distinction difficult to grasp? Is it hard for a reporter (or many reports in this case) to realize that the Church is against destroying embryos, not against using stem cells? It appears (here comes the Conspiracy Theory) that painting the Church as anti-science sells more newspapers than reporting the common-sense truth of Church teaching.
Well, if it’s ignorance or malice, either way I’m one Catholic who wishes reporters would spend a little more time doing their homework before stating what they think is the Church’s position.
