Nelson Amendment Tabled: Abortion Coverage Remains in Senate Bill

Yesterday, the Nelson amendment, which would have amended the current healthcare legislation in the Senate to prevent any government subsidized insurance plan from funding elective abortion, was tabled. This effectively kills the amendment.

So, now what?

Well, unless there is stronger language prohibiting the funding of abortion, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has made it very clear that this healthcare bill is not in keeping with Catholic moral teaching. In other words, I don’t see how faithful Catholics can support the bill as it now stands.

Six Democrats voted in favor of the Nelson amendment. I’m proud to say both North Dakotan Senators are on the list (full list here). You can imagine the pressure they must be under to fall in line with the party, ignore their constituents, and just pass the bill as it is. I strongly encourage each of you to contact your Senators and let them know your feelings on the matter and don’t forget to thank them if they voted in favor of the Nelson amendment.

Contact information may be found here.

Also, please take some time today to pray for the outcome of this healthcare legislation. There’s no doubt that our country needs improvements to our healthcare system; let’s just make it an improvement we can all live with!
